by @ 5:52 am. Filed under Carolina Mudcats - April 2009, Jose Castro, Misael DeJesus, Sean Henry

Not too many teams can survive a nine run inning and that’s what the Mudcats gave up in the second inning yesterday.  Most of those came off of Misael DeJesus, who was credited with eight of those runs on five hits and three walks in just 1 1/3 innings.  The loss dropped him to 1-1 on the season.

Sean Henry was one of the hitting stars.  He went two for four with a double, two RBIs and a run.  Jose Castro was two for two with a run.

Dragons Lose to Fort Wayne In Ten

by @ 6:34 pm. Filed under Cody Puckett, Curtis Partch, Dayton Dragons - April 2009, Mike Bohana

This looked like a fun game.  Dayton jumped out to a 4-2 lead only to see it turn into a deficit when Fort Wayne scored three in the fifth.  The Dragons then tied it in the sixth and the game then turned into a pitcher’s duel until Fort Wayne won it in the tenth.  Curtis Partch was roughed up and he gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings while Mike Bohana took the loss when his runner scored in the tenth.

Cody Puckett was the hitting star in the 6-5 loss.  He went three for five with a home run and three RBIs.  Kyle Day went two for four with a double, a walk and a run.

by @ 6:47 am. Filed under Andrew Bowman, Byron Wiley, David Sappelt, Dayton Dragons - April 2009, Lance Janke, Scott Gafney

A solid start by Lance Janke went to waste as the Dragons pen fell apart in an 8-3 loss to Fort Wayne.  Janke gave up one run on four hits and one walk with four strikeouts in five innings before seeing the game get out of hand.  Andrew Bowman took the loss and he fell to 0-2.  He gave up three runs in 1 1/3 innings while Scott Gafney gave up four runs and he got just one batter out.

David Sappelt went two for five with a double and two runs.  Byron Wiley went two for four with a run.

Sarasota Skid Reaches Five

by @ 6:42 am. Filed under Denis Phipps, Jeremy Horst, Sarasota Reds - April 2009, Yonder Alonso

The Reds dropped their fifth straight game in a 4-1 loss to Jupiter.  All four runs against them came in the first four frames in a mediocre start by Jeremy Horst.  He fell to 0-1 and he gave up four runs (two earned) on six hits with a strikeout.

Yonder Alonso drove in the lone run and he singled.  He has yet to live up to the hype as his number one prospect billing with a .156 batting average so far.  Denis Phipps singled and doubled for the only multi-hit game.

Bullpen Costs Sarasota In Loss to Palm Beach

by @ 11:45 pm. Filed under Alex Buchholz, Carson Kainer, Logan Ondrusek, Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette, Sarasota Reds - April 2009, Travis Webb

Travis Webb must have felt okay about this one.  Yeah, he gave up a first inning run and the Reds still didn’t have the lead when he left after four, but one run isn’t that much to make up.  Unfortunately, the pen imploded and the end result was a 5-2 loss.  Webb took the loss but Logan Ondrusek and Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette combined to give up four in the seventh that put this one out of reach.

Alex Buchholz doubled twice and scored a run in the loss.  Carson Kainer went two for three with a walk and an RBI.

Mudcats Held to Five Hits In Loss to Mobile

by @ 11:42 pm. Filed under Carolina Mudcats - April 2009, Sean Henry, Travis Wood

Zero runs and just five hits does not a win make.  All five of the Mudcats hits were singles and only one hitter, leadoff hitter Sean Henry, had a multi-hit game with two safeties in the 2-0 loss.

A decent start by Travis Wood went to waste.  He gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Adam Pettyjohn was roughed up and he took the loss.  He fell to 0-1 and he gave up four runs on six hits and four walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Pitching Should Carry Bats in 2009

by @ 5:50 pm. Filed under Louisville Bats - April 2009

The Bats made a nice run last year but fell short of a Governors Cup.  This year, they should be right back in the mix though with some familiar faces on the mound.  Homer Bailey, Daryl Thompson, Adam Pettyjohn and Ramon Ramirez all pitched for the Bats at some point back in 2008 and they anchor a solid rotation that should help carry the Bats in 2009.  Of course they won’t have the services of guys like Jay Bruce, but they’ll just have to make due.  Drew Stubbs is a guy to watch though.

Man, this weather is a drag.  I’m sitting on two brand new mitts and I can’t get out and work either one.  It just looks like my Rawlings baseball glove and my nokona baseball glove will have to sit in their boxes until things warm up.
